She visited again last night. Her name which I didn’t mention in the mystery yesterday is Jacquelyne. She doesn’t often admit it; she has a character for a brother. Jack Frost is her twin.
I stood watching, listening on the deck this morning while Soleil took away all the evidence of Jacquelyne's visit; while the dogs puzzled went into the house, came out again. I haven’t heard any chipmunks, nor seen them. A woodpecker banged on a tree in the direction of the sun; there was no seeing him only spots when I looked. Two new voices joined the bird conversation: A Magnolia Warbler, an American Redstart. Pollen gathers atop the calm pond to be moved further downstream when there is a shuffling breeze.
The real voyage of discovery
consists not
in seeking new landscapes,
but in having new eyes. --Marcel Proust
