Weather conditions optimal for carrying sound, the rooster could be in the driveway. No traffic noise; perhaps too early for going to work or coming home from the night shift. Early to my desk, sun sits atop the corner of the monitor, shines through blinds into my eyes.

I look into my water glass before drinking to be sure nothing is swimming or has drowned and sunk to the bottom. Once when I didn’t look, when the glass was clear like this one, a wasp clung to an ice cube too stunned or wet to fly. No ice cubes in this glass, they melted overnight. I caught sight of the wasp, just as I was putting my lips to the glass.

Last night, two running in circles, roused clouds of black that drifted, settled on the car. Dew resides there now. More evening primrose blossoms and buds of promise. I wonder if the hummingbird has seen them.

Don’t let the run-around cloud your vision, the dust will settle.
