Dew sparkles the car. I wait to hear birds. Zayne looks for deer. Silence. Sky paints herself blue, cloudy, absent of Soleil. Mariah, breathless. Coffee steams in the sunshine cup, dried flowers wait to be photographed, books wait to be read, dogs wait to be fed. Dust lingers.

I sit the smiling duck atop a brass candle holder that came from somewhere to sit on my desk. It blocks part of the monitor as Zsolt often blocks the view of the television waiting for a bite or for some mommying. He is bored. Each time I pass through the gate the three remember freedom.

Keeping others safe can stifle them.
