A golden platter, moon rising higher lit ice-skimmed water Friday night. Trees wrapped in white. Soleil takes a vacation day. Ice for six hours so says the forecast. Air too cold for breathing. Frost. No birds singing. No rooster crowing. No traffic. Steeped in silence, chimney smoke settles in oak ridge hollow. Not enough light to extinguish, some candles flame in darkened windows. The three out/in settled again into warm beds before they were cold.

Rhythms of winter like a drumbeat.
