Orange bands the eastern horizon dissolves into gray. Mariah clashes branches, cools faces. Snow a thin silk blanket. I leave the three to their morning tasks, perform a workout with compression pantyhose. The three tumble through the portal separating cold from warm, swarm about the kitchen restless eager for biscuits for attention.

Once again, the three sleep. More light filters through curtains, not enough to extinguish the lights inside. Like a drumbeat, deep notes of a heavy truck vibrate through the hollow, come into the house, vanish.

The music of morning always evolving.
