Clouds like bunched quilt stuffing. Blue sky. Sun briefly. He’s on that roof on Labor Day. Blue Jay voice coming from a distance. Dew. Crickets here and there, not a chorus, not loud. Eyes not quite in focus. Hands cold. Coffee steaming in red cup. Spider strings from umbrella to wooden railing. The three sleeping. Time to schedule furnace service. Last time without a drop cloth, plumber’s cement landed on rolled vinyl flooring. No longer looking like a crime scene, faded from blood red to black, I see those drops each time I enter the kitchen.
Some things can’t be undone.
