It was dark. I almost walked into a spider dangling in the doorway at 0500. I didn’t step over the threshold, I backed up, I remained inside while the three turned on sensor lights. Wind flew leaves yesterday; several towering trees stand bareheaded. More green leaves than this time last year.

As has become the pattern, a White-throated Sparrow spoke first. I thought American Robins were long gone, yet one joined the conversation this morning. The usually raucous Blue Jays and American Crows were civil, almost quiet not booming over White-crowned Sparrow, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Northern Cardinal, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Eastern Phoebe, Dark-eyed Junco.

Mornings and last call, the three receive a whole biscuit. This morning as coffee dripped into the clear cup, I opened the tin again and gave them each one more. Since the furnace was serviced, Zsolt has declared himself my armor.

There are blessings that come without words.
