I have to stop going outside with the dogs leaving the door open after I’ve turned the heat on. Eyes adjusting to darkness, I lean against the railing, find the shape-shifting moon no longer round. No clouds this morning. Orange rises behind the tangle of limbs on the horizon seeps into a band of white lying beside gray. Traffic noise. Coffee cooling, heated jacket warming.
The days of open doors are closing.
