At 0200 snow gathers on deck, soft fluffy. Hours later, the three press against me waiting for the door to open. In the past, I’ve swept a path before letting them out. I wait for breath, for wakefulness. Push the button to drip coffee into a pale blue cup.

Zsolt, the last to come in bolts for the sofa draped with a striped beach towel, before I can dry him. Sleep follows puppy biscuits. One of the giants bark in a dream, not loud, not a startled bark, more like a warning. I wonder if he’ll remember when he wakes.

Snow falling.
