Fog crawls atop the stream as if a living thing. Frost, heavy etches car windows. Sun white. Sky blue, no variation. Spindly branches balance tiny leaves. Spider strings on railing, on the make-believe tree that lost leaves throughout winter. Last night: moon, gleepers, too dark to see the stream. Two American Robins volley joined later, as coffee dripped, by Black-capped Chickadee, White-breasted Nuthatch, White-throated Sparrow. Zayne runs a straight line like a toy on a string his turns to reverse, a blur. Later, when the sun warms the dark ground, Zayne will delight rolling about.

The energy of spring.
