32 degrees, light enough to see at 0400, still dark enough for sensor lights to shine in my eyes as the three amble their fenced-in-land. Two hours later, heat leaks from the blue cup, warms my hands. Sun beams through branches casting shadows, lighting the pond. So much water is gone. Perhaps there’s a beaver dam upstream.
The bird chorus has changed, as if the greeting of a new season has passed; now a calm register of everyday voices rather than the rush of arriving, getting nests ready. Red-breasted Nuthatch, Northern Parula, Nashville Warbler, Brown Creeper, Veery, Magnolia Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Ovenbird, American Robin, Least Flycatcher, Red-eyed Vireo. The rooster sounds the same.
Life settles into pattern again.
