No rooster crowing. No traffic noise settling into the hollow. Black ducks not seen since the last rain. Perhaps they appear in the hours when no one is looking, when there are no dogs to bark, to fly them. Only birds sitting on the fence are seen briefly through windows, not once the door opens. A small bird flies from under the deck perhaps trying to nest there as other small birds tried last year.
A spider crawls on the edge of crown molding perhaps looking for the gap it emerged from. Perhaps it crawled up the wall. Who knows. It stops crawling as if aware that I am looking.
I might have seen the moon last night, if I had been looking.
