Ruger did not want to join us outside before 0500, merely opened his eyes, thumped his tail. Meager light says we all should still be sleeping; as if light rather than hands on a clock is the decisionmaker. Puddles. Gray sky, not threatening. Wicks on citronella torches flattened like pancakes. One blue chair blown over. More of the lawn washed through boulders. No birds. No rooster. No traffic.

Bless those who are clock keepers.
