Traffic noise greeted at 0500, not much else, much less light. Hours later, a Black-capped Chickadee greeted, joined eventually by an American Goldfinch, Red-eyed Vireo. Ovenbird usually the first to speak mornings and solitary voice of evening has not been heard for days.

Zayne and Zsolt sit wedged against Ruger as if he were a bookend. Not enjoying the weight against him, Ruger walks into the kitchen, the giants lie side-by-side eyes toward the hall, shuffle again.

A deer crossed the stream to munch grasses. Perhaps it was when she lifted her head that Zayne began barking, jumping. Zsolt didn’t join in, he chased Zayne. The deer, unfazed kept grazing.

There’s a difference in boundaries, in knowing you are safe, in ignoring the noise around you.
