Merlin listened for over ten minutes to hear four birds: Eastern Wood-Pewee, Red-eyed Vireo, Brown Creeper, American Goldfinch. Sky like white cloth washed in a muddy stream. No sun. No traffic noise. No rooster down the road. A morning requiring lights even with curtains open.
I keep looking at The Best of Lewis Carroll on the shelf between The Complete Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales and The Illustrated Age of Fable. Perhaps they are just the books in my line of vision. Yesterday I chopped heads off seeded grasses. Perhaps they will take root in the dry places where Zayne relishes dirt baths turning his black shine dull gray, if his sheets were not already black, they would be.
Some would refer to this day as nondescript. It is not.
Even summer days require resting.
