To keep from falling, I lean against the railing, look up for the moon. There’s enough light to see treetops, some bare, some leaved. I don’t see my breath, don’t see the moon. Railing wet with dew. I could hear boards creak if I stood in the right place. I found that place a few days ago moving a light to shine on the deck. If I could, if I were able to climb a ladder, to keep my balance, I’d be stapling defrosting wire in a steady heart-wave pattern to keep the eaves from freezing. Roof raked and shoveled our first winter. Not by me.
Years of doing “anything I think I can” no longer a risk I’m taking.
