The brown shaggy monster stands sentinel over the placid pond, moon gone, gleepers silent. Sun white, risen into treetops. Blue sky. Clouds a spray of white, others in ribbons. More green has emerged, unfolded. Giants bark something in the driveway. Ruger stands on deck with me, looking. The ducks must arrive at other times. Times when we are not looking.

The birds, they sing: Yellow-rumped Warbler, Eastern Towhee, Black-and-white Warbler, Least Flycatcher, Northern Waterthrush, Magnolia Warbler, Northern Cardinal, American Robin, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Eastern Phoebe, American Redstart, Common Yellowthroat, Hermit Thrush, Ovenbird, Red-eyed Vireo.

I listen for the songs after months of silence.
