The three were not ready for morning when I asked, “Who wants to go out?” Zayne watched me curled on his corner of the twin bed, not wanting to get up, not wanting to disappoint, he followed. Ruger lifted his head in response, put it down again needing more time for wakefulness before trying to balance, to walk. Leg cramps don’t provide that time as I’ve known for many nights, yet the only resolution is to stand immediately, to walk. It is there that sleep ends no matter the clock.

Sensor lights turn on as the dogs walk down the ramp, as I look for deer, for movement. Not even a leaf. All is still, even the stream. Sky covered in her white blanket. No rain. No spider strings. No birds sing. No rooster crows.

It is not light, but time that separates morning from night.
