Across the stream last evening, as I washed dishes, a doe, her twins feasting. A hummingbird visited me twice on deck while I was cleaning, so close it might have brushed skin or my blue dress with white flowers. 0500 was dark, dry. Sensor lights shone as the three moved through the fenced-in land. He won’t be sheathing a roof today nor watching plywood slipped from a grasp hurtling toward him. Rain is falling. I imagine his arm that took the brunt is sore although he will not say.

Though often taught otherwise, feeling pain is not a sign of weakness.
