Without me watching, day evolved from night to gray, without enough blankets. Drop of blood found after the three sat in the kitchen for a biscuit. Not blood, a tiny red leaf carried inside by feet. Zayne wanted to escape with me through the gate. I didn’t let him. Gravel crunched under my feet. An Eastern Bluebird heard. Merlin kept listening for birds once we came inside. I didn’t notice until this moment.

You have to be where the birds might be to hear them.
