Blue Jay squawks unseen in the thinning canopy. Sensor lights turn on as the three cover every inch of fenced-in-land. Frost patterns car windows. Like a prayer, several trees hold up bare branches, just as many offer leaves. I passed through the gate while coffee dripped, while the three slept, found no flowers, found no icy stream edges. Gravel crunched. No deer looked up startled to see me. My bare hands aren’t cold though they probably will be. Time for coffee.

Look up. Look down. Look around you.
